Mobility Scooter Accessories
Through the use of a few well thought out accessories, a mobility scooter can be customized to your exact needs and add it's usefulness.
Accessorizing, at least when it comes to your mobility scooter, means much more than spicing up its looks. With the addition of the right accessory or two, you'll be able to get the most out of your scooter. This includes items such as larger batteries, better tires, canopy, a cane holder or more. We'll cover some of the most popular mobility scooter accessories in detail below.
Side Bags, Packs and Backpacks
Extra storage for your mobility scooter could really come in handy, especially when traveling around the mall or on shopping trips. You might find yourself at the grocery store and find that the basket on your scooter just doesn't provide enough room to carry what you need. You may also want to carry tools, baggage or personal items in your scooter - and bags, packs or backpacks would really make this job easier. Expect to pay around $40 depending on quality.
Various Item Holders
Obviously you're using your mobility scooter to help you get around, either because of age or a medical condition which makes it hard to walk. It's natural to want to carry a cane or walking stick with you so that you can get around if you need to leave your scooter for a bit, like going to the bathroom or getting to a chair so you can eat at a restaurant. You can also get cup holders that fit over your armrests. These accessories can usually be found for as little as $30 most places.
Larger Batteries or Tires
One of the more expensive upgrades you can make, a larger battery and bigger tires really come in handy if you drive your electric mobility scooter long distances. Expect to pay $100-$200 for an improved battery or extra set of wheels and tires that will dramatically extend your travel zone.
Canopies and Capes
Much like a car cover, you can find trendy and stylish canopy and scooter covers that will help to protect it from the elements whether you're storing it indoors our outdoors. The canopy, in particular, is useful if you do alot of traveling outdoors as it can provide cover from the elements such as rain and the sun. Quality is important here, especially if you spend time outdoors, so expect to pay between $70 and $150 for a nice canopy.
Ramps and Lifts
While you can't take these with you strapped to the back of your mobility scooter (at least not easily), scooter lifts and ramps will really open up your mobility. These come in real hand when your home has steps or you need to load a full sized scooter on the back of a vehicle. Also one of the more expensive upgrades, expect to pay up to $1,000 with installation depending on the model and quality.
